Havering-atte-Bower Conservation Society

HABCOS

Havering-atte-Bower Conservation Society was formed  with the aim of preserving the extensive history of Havering-atte-Bower, maintaining the beauty of the conservation area and supporting the community who live here.   We take a keen interest in planning applications and issues of road safety that could affect these aims. We keep a watchful eye on the state of our much cherished local country parks.

Successful projects have included designing and producing a village sign, providing a defibrillator for the village, establishing a weekly coffee morning for people in the village and local area, restoring a bench overlooking one of the many beauty spots, setting up ‘Tommy’ a silhouette of a WW1 soldier on the village Green and removing brambles from the edges of the village pond.

Last year a series of short group walks was held covering the varied history of the village including links to the palaces that were in the village and the Kings who visited them and the famous Wellingtonia Avenue in Havering Country Park with its line of huge coniferous Californian sequoia trees.

We raise funds from various events, quizzes, fetes etc. Our most popular events for the community have always been our Easter Egg Hunt, Carols on the Green around the Christmas Tree and Horseman Sunday.  Horseman Sunday is a service of blessing for horses for the important part they played in WW1. We are one of the very few places in the country that continue the tradition.

Our most recent project was restoring the village pond on the Green, known locally as ‘the Ducking Pond’.  The restoration, with help from a grant from Veolia and managed by Havering Parks, has made the pond a central feature of the village thus preserving its historical legacy and enhancing the habitat for wildlife and wild flowers.
